Our Core Values

Building Commercial Cassava Value Chains in Sierra Leone

From cassava processors to bankable businesses and sustainable markets

Our experience

Since 2024, Innovation SL has supported 11 cassava processors through incubation and acceleration activities covering

Our work recognises that each processor faces a different principal constraint. Some need to improve quality or production consistency. Others need stronger financial records, more appropriate equipment, dependable cassava roots or access to buyers. We therefore begin with evidence and diagnose the business before prescribing support.
Value Chain

Moving beyond training

Many value-chain programmes concentrate on production and training while giving
insufficient attention to the commercial systems required to turn increased output into
sustainable income.

Innovation SL’s approach starts with the market.
We examine what prospective buyers require, including product specifications, quantities, prices, packaging, delivery schedules and quality-assurance expectations. We then work backwards through the value chain to determine whether processors and suppliers can meet those requirements reliably and profitably.

Our objective is not simply to connect participants at an event. It is to help structure realistic commercial pathways that can lead to product trials, buyer validation, supply agreements and repeat transactions.

Cassava-based inputs for poultry-feed production

Retail and hospitality markets

Institutional food buyers

Distributors and aggregators

Local and regional food processors

Market opportunities are evaluated against actual buyer requirements and processor capacity. Buyers are not described as committed until interest, specifications and commercial terms have been validated.

Sustainable production and productive use of energy

Cassava processing can be constrained by high energy costs, water requirements, waste management and inefficient equipment. Innovation SL can incorporate productive-use-of energy and Water–Energy–Food Nexus considerations into value-chain programmes. This includes assessing opportunities for:
